Sumitomo Electric Lightwave’s Transit Tunnel Optical Networking Solutions Honored by 2024 CI&M Innovators Awards
[Raleigh, NC, Sep 16, 2024] - Sumitomo Electric Lightwave (SEL), a Sumitomo Electric Industries Group company, announced today that it was named a Gold Honoree in the 2024 Cabling Installation & Maintenance Innovators Awards. An esteemed and experienced panel of judges from the cabling community recognized SEL’s Transit Tunnel Solutions Optical Ribbon Cables and Enclosures for enabling faster, cost-effective, and safer intra-city fiber deployments.
“On behalf of the Cabling Installation & Maintenance Innovators Awards, I would like to congratulate SEL on their Gold level honoree status,” said Cabling Installation & Maintenance Chief Editor Patrick McLaughlin. “This competitive program allows Cabling Installation & Maintenance to celebrate and recognize the most innovative products, projects, technologies, and programs impacting the industry.”
SEL developed the Transit Tunnel Optical Networking Solutions to overcome the challenges inherent in last-mile, urban fiber optic deployments, such as limited space, complex utility layouts, and costly, disruptive surface-level construction. SEL’s solutions enable cities to leverage their often-overlooked, existing tunnel systems to quickly and cost-effectively expand their broadband infrastructure in a weather-protected environment without impacting the flow of city life overhead.
The award-winning solutions include SEL’s NFPA 130 standards-compliant dry Freeform Ribbon™ Transit Cable, designed for duct, direct buried, and direct tray installations, and IP66-compliant Transit Enclosures. Available pre-terminated or splice-ready, the enclosures provide a secure, clean, and cost-efficient distribution point for transitioning cables in environmentally hardened, water-tight, and key-lockable wall or ceiling-mountable installations.
“We are honored to have been selected for this prestigious award. SEL is committed to innovating and delivering the highest-level products to improve broadband access in our increasingly data-driven society,” stated Josh Seawell, SEL’s Director of Product Management.
“Earning Gold honoree status inspires us to set the bar even higher for the future, as we work with our customers to expand the reach of fiber optic networks for improved economic development, education, healthcare, and community engagement.”
